On 21 September 1945, not long after the finish of World War II, a high school kid, Seita, kicks the bucket of starvation in a Kobe train station. A janitor figures out his assets and finds a sweets tin, which he tosses into a field. The soul of Seita's more youthful sister, Setsuko, springs from the tin and is joined by Seita's soul and a haze of fireflies. They board a train.
Months sooner, Seita and Setsuko's home is demolished in a firebombing alongside the majority of Kobe. They get away from safe, yet their mom bites the dust from serious consumes. Seita and Setsuko move in with a far off auntie, who persuades Seita to sell his mom's silk kimonos for rice. Seita recovers supplies he covered before the bombarding and offers everything to his auntie, put something aside for a tin of Sakuma drops. As apportions recoil and the quantity of evacuees in the house develops, the auntie gets angry of the kids, saying they don't do anything to procure the food she gets ready.
Seita and Setsuko leave the auntie's home and move into a deserted reinforced hideout. They discharge fireflies into the safe house for light. The following day, Setsuko is frightened to find that the bugs have kicked the bucket. She covers them in a grave, inquiring as to why they and her mom needed to kick the bucket. As they come up short on rice, Seita takes from ranchers and plunders homes during air strikes, for which he is beaten. When Setsuko becomes sick, Seita takes her to a specialist, who clarifies that she is experiencing ailing health.
